The Fort Delaware Society is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, chartered in 1950, and dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of historic Fort Delaware. The Society’s mission is to: (1) foster awareness of this historic treasure among the general public, (2) raise and expend funds for current restoration and interpretive needs, and (3) promote continuing research into the history of the site, the soldiers and civilians who worked there, all those who were imprisoned there, and all who died there. Most remembered as a Civil War prison camp, Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island served as a guardian of the Delaware River from the War of 1812 through World War II. Our supporting members include descendants of both Union and Confederate soldiers, and a great many others with no family ties to Fort Delaware. All are driven by a simple desire to preserve this important piece of America’s history. The Society operates the Fort Delaware Museum, the Sutler Shop, and the W. Emerson Wilson Research Library; publishes books and other documents relating to Fort Delaware; administers the Fort Delaware Fund; and conducts Genealogical Research for descendants of prisoners and members of the garrison. Society members, and non-members, interested in "hands on" work supporting the Fort Delaware State Park staff out on Pea Patch Island can participate by enrolling in the Society's Volunteer Brigade.
